Sisters-in-law needed a new car as their old Subaru was pretty much at the end of its life regardless of the work and money that has been put into it. Went to Mazda, then Kia, then Ford where they fell in love with and bought this CPO ‘13 Focus. They really like the ‘13 Mazda 6 but it wasn’t CPO and their sales team wasn’t very helpful, and the driving position was “too low”. Kia was a bust as they couldn’t find the car we wanted to look at, and their salesman seemed to hate the fact that I was there to help (even though I was super nice and not even remotely argumentative (wife even said so!), he even said “bullshit!” to my face when I told him we weren’t getting the Subaru he suggested because they have head gasket problems!). The Ford guys couldn’t have been better and sold the car for a reasonable price and even had plates on it and helped them get insurance set up before leaving the store. Shout out to David at Damerow Ford in Portland for the excellent experience.

Nice work.

It must be flattering to be the source of safety and knowledge when dealing with car-buying for the non-car people that salesmen might take for a ride.

I frankly still can’t stand the dealership experience (except Sim’s Honda in Mt. Vernon: they kept repairing my car for free after warranty expired back in college). I did eventually go to a dealership with good service to purchase my wife’s car, but that was after about half a dozen shitty experiences. I’m hoping the next go around will be smoother, but really, I just hope that car lasts forever so I never have to do it again.

It does feel pretty good, I’m almost as excited as they are I think.

It’s amazing how different the experience can be from one dealer to the next. Bad experiences are probably the result of just one or two people and some bad luck. Show up five minutes later and get the best salesman ever.

Yeah, you get the high of a savvy, rewarding purchase, and someone else shelled out all that cash! :) And then in one month someone will tell how oh God they love their new car. Sorry for swerving back for me, but that’s what made it worth it in the end: my wife loves her car. She has never owned a car she wanted (every previous car was out of necessity or last resort), which is something I had already experienced and can’t imagine another human not enjoying.

A very good choice. If you go out in weather that requires AWD - STAY HOME! “Problem” solved.

Yup! There’s no way those two need AWD.

I call bullshit! Subarus don’t have issues! They’re perfect and run forever!

The Subaru guy must’ve been thinking “What are these head gaskets I keep hearing about?”

He wasn’t even a Subaru guy, just a Kia salesman trying to sell a car. He talked as if he knew all there was to know about all cars, especially those on his lot, and his word was law.
